In the spirit of the Boston Red Sox opening their season tomorrow, it seems appropriate to start with a baseball themed post.

The Boston Red Sox are entering the 2023 season with low expectations after finishing last in 2022. FanGraphs's ZiPS Projected Standings tabbed the Red Sox for a 79-83 record. However, Red Sox manager Alex Cora is motivated to turn around the team's performance and orchestrate an unexpected postseason push. The Red Sox finished spring training with a 14-14-4 record. Triston Casas, the Red Sox's No. 2 prospect, was arguably the club's best hitter of the spring. The Red Sox will need much more out of Tanner Houck, who struggled with his command and is coming off season-ending back surgery.

Experts don't necessarily expect the Red Sox to have a great deal of success this season. WynnBET puts their projected win total at 86, behind the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Rays in their division and also behind the Astros and White Sox in the American League. FanGraphs slots the Red Sox third in the AL East with 87 wins, behind the Jays and Yankees and just ahead of the Rays. The site gives the Red Sox a 12.3 percent chance to take the division, 49.1 percent chance to earn a Wild Card berth, and 4.2 percent chance to win the World Series. Sports Betting Dime and CBS Sports both slot their projected win total at 85.5. ESPN's Jeff Passan notes that the Red Sox are "worth considering" at +500 with the fourth-longest odds in the division.
